How the Break-Even Timeline Planner Works

With ₹60,000 to recover, a ₹100 selling price, ₹60 variable cost and 500 units sold monthly, break-even time is 3.0 months.

Contribution per Unit = Selling Price − Variable Cost
Monthly Contribution = Contribution per Unit × Monthly Units Sold
Break-Even Time = Fixed Costs to Recover ÷ Monthly Contribution

Estimate how many months are needed to recover a fixed cost using expected monthly contribution.

This calculator is a planning tool. Actual business results can differ because of changing prices, volumes, timing, taxes, financing, one-time costs and other operating factors.

How to use this calculator

What to enter

Enter or select the following as requested: Currency — Display Only; Fixed Costs to Recover (); Selling Price per Unit (); Variable Cost per Unit (); Expected Monthly Units Sold. Follow the units, valid ranges, examples, and options displayed beside each field.

What the result means

The estimated break-even time is the fixed cost to recover divided by monthly contribution. Monthly contribution is (selling price per unit minus variable cost per unit) multiplied by expected monthly units sold. If monthly contribution is zero or negative, the cost will not be recovered under these assumptions. The result assumes monthly sales and margins remain steady.

When to use it

Use this to estimate how many months of expected sales are needed to recover an initial or fixed cost. Test conservative sales assumptions and include relevant costs that are not represented in the inputs.
