How is compound interest calculated?

Compound interest adds earned interest to the balance, allowing later interest to be calculated on the increased balance.

Compound interest formula

A = P × (1 + r/n)nt
  • A = final amount
  • P = principal amount
  • r = annual interest rate in decimal form
  • n = number of compounding periods per year
  • t = time in years

Why does compounding frequency matter?

When the other assumptions stay the same, interest that is compounded more frequently can produce a different final amount because interest is added to the balance more often.

Common frequencies

  • Annually — once per year
  • Half-yearly — twice per year
  • Quarterly — four times per year
  • Monthly — twelve times per year

Example

A 100,000 investment at 8% annual interest for 5 years, compounded monthly, grows to about 148,985 in the selected currency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is compound interest?

Compound interest is interest calculated on the original principal plus interest accumulated during earlier periods.

What is the difference between simple and compound interest?

Simple interest is calculated on the original principal, while compound interest also takes previously accumulated interest into account.

Does monthly compounding always give more interest?

For the same positive rate and period, more frequent compounding generally produces a higher final amount under this formula.

Can I use this calculator for investments?

Yes. It can provide a mathematical estimate of compound growth, but actual investment returns can vary and may include fees, taxes, deposits, withdrawals or changing rates.

Is this calculator accurate?

It uses the standard compound-interest formula. Actual financial products may use different terms, rates, fees, taxes or calculation conventions.
