FIRE Target

Your FIRE number is annual expenses divided by the withdrawal rate. The projection then grows your portfolio by the expected return and annual contribution while increasing the FIRE target with inflation.

FIRE Estimate

A planning estimate based on the assumptions you entered.

ImportantThis is a mathematical planning estimate, not a guarantee or investment advice. Actual results can differ because returns, inflation, expenses, taxes, fees and withdrawals can change over time.

How the FIRE Calculator Works

The calculator estimates the portfolio needed for financial independence from your annual expenses and chosen withdrawal rate. It then projects your current investments forward using the expected annual return and annual contribution.

FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ (Withdrawal Rate ÷ 100)
Portfolionext year = Portfoliocurrent × (1 + Return) + Annual Contribution
FIRE Targetyear = FIRE Number × (1 + Inflation)Years

Because inflation increases future spending, the FIRE target also increases each year. The estimated FIRE age is your current age plus the projected years required for the portfolio to reach that inflation-adjusted target.

How to use this calculator

What to enter

Enter or select the following as requested: Currency — Display Only; Current Age (years); Annual Expenses (); Current Investments (); Annual Contribution (); Expected Annual Return (%); Inflation Rate (%); Withdrawal Rate (%). Follow the units, valid ranges, examples, and options displayed beside each field.

What the result means

The financial result is a projection based on the contribution or principal, rate of return or interest, fees, tax assumptions, and time period entered. Check compounding frequency, deposit timing, inflation treatment, and whether the rate is nominal or real; actual returns and tax treatment can differ.

When to use it

Use this to compare savings, investment, deposit, or personal-finance scenarios. Treat the result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed return, and verify current product terms, fees, and local tax rules before making a financial decision.
